HS2, the developer and promoter of the UK’s new high-speed rail network, has contracted a team of engineering delivery partners to assist in their £900m HS2 project.

Construction is scheduled to commence next year.

The HS2 project is part of the government’s plan to rebalance the UK economy and build a Northern Powerhouse by providing high-speed rail services from London to the Midlands and the north.

The delivery team comprising of CH2M, Atkins and Sener, will operate with HS2 in an integrated way during the course of the project.

Under the ten-year contract, which includes phase one construction, the team will support in the preparation and procurement of the main civil contracts and subsequent work packages, including stations and railway systems.

"Today’s contract award marks an important milestone as we continue to move towards the start of construction in 2017."

They will provide their support during the construction and designing stage of the project. This also includes providing project engineering and construction management, as well as technical assurance of design.

HS2 Construction managing director Jim Crawford said: "Today’s contract award marks an important milestone as we continue to move towards the start of construction in 2017.

"It is vital that we constantly challenge our suppliers to ensure we deliver long-term value for money for the taxpayer, as well as a world class railway for all our passengers, stakeholders and communities along the line."

In February, UK transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin opened the headquarters for the proposed HS2 project in Birmingham, employing approximately 1,000 staff, including engineers and procurement specialists.

HS2 launched two consultations on its environmental impact assessment (EIA) and equality impact assessment (EQIA) scope and methodology reports for the Phase IIa section of the High Speed 2 (HS2) line.
