Indian Rail is planning to upgrade the trains running in its Western Railway (WR) section from 1.5kV direct current (DC) to 25kV alternating current (AC) to improve the speed of the line.
The upgrade will consume less electricity and allow trains to run at a higher speed without worrying about the capacity of its electric network.
The power upgrade is part of a Rs5bn ($98.7m) project to eliminate residual DC electrification from the Western and Central Railway networks serving Mumbai.
The conversion will be carried out in six phases, covering Kalyan-Thane, Thane-Kurla, Thane-Vashi, Mankhurd-Panvel, Kurla-CST and CST-Mankhurd.
Indian Rail requires 140 trains to run on the new power mode and it is planning to complete the project by December 2012.
