Network Rail in the UK has awarded a £400m contract to Costain to remodel London Bridge rail station and a £50m contract to Balfour Beatty Rail for track remodelling work under the Thameslink programme.

The London Bridge redevelopment project includes building new entrances on Tooley Street and St Thomas Street to increase passenger capacity through the station from 50 million to 75 million, as well as expanding the space at the station by 66%.

The project also involves the reformation of entrance and exit points to improve access to and from the station.

Under the contract awarded to Balfour Beatty Rail, the company will provide detailed design, installation, testing and commissioning work for the track remodelling.

The redesign of the tracks, platforms and station will allow an increase of train frequency from 16 to 24 per hour.

The project is due to commence in 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2018.
