UK-based Network Rail has announced plans to carry out more than 200 improvement and upgrade projects as part of a £70m investment across the country.

The newly announced works are part of a railway upgrade plan being carried out across the UK, to help provide passengers with better railway services and modernise the existing facilities.

Network Rail route managing director Martin Frobisher said: “We are carrying out must-do railway upgrades to improve services for customers.

“For those travelling by rail over Easter, we and train operators aim to keep you safely and swiftly on the move.

"To ensure this happens our advice is to check before you travel, and plan your journeys in advance.”

The investment project will see Network Rail‘s 'orange army' of construction workers and technicians carry out a wide range of projects such as track renewals and upgrades, as well as bridge replacements.

Works will take place on the line between London Euston and Carlisle through to the West Midlands and north west, and includes ongoing work on the Ordsall Chord in Manchester as part of the Great North Rail Project.

The West Coast main line will undergo track renewal through the Northchurch Tunnel near Berkhamsted, and bridge upgrade work is set to be carried out in Albrighton to reduce the number of maintenance issues.

Further work involves renewal of track on the West Coast main line between Preston and Carlisle in order to improve general reliability.

Network Rail also noted it is investing £4m as part of a railway upgrade project at Waterloo under a separate scheme.

The Waterloo & South West upgrade will see the replacement of important sections of track, as well as the installation of a new signalling gantry at Waterloo station.

The upgrade aims to achieve a 30% increase in capacity by December next year.

It has also been announced that engineers will carry out work to the signalling equipment at Twickenham station.
