Paris transit authority RATP has launched the first driverless trains on Metro Line 1 as part of a €600m automation project.
Under the project, eight automatic driverless trains will run on the line along with manually operated trains.

RATP is planning to add two additional trains each month until December 2012, making all 49 trains on the 16.6km east-west line fully automated.
Line 1 serves 25 stations from La Défense to Château de Vincennes, carrying 725,000 passengers a day.
The project also involves setting up driverless trains and an operations control centre, and installing 954 half-height platform screen doors with CCTV and new communications systems.
Siemens has provided its Trainguard MT CBTC solution and control centre, which controls train movements, and 954 platform screen doors for each of the line’s platforms under a contract signed in 2005, while Alstom has provided 53 MP05 six-car trainsets.
