Light Rail Transport Authority of the Philippines is planning to seek bids for Metro Manila’s PHP60bn ($1.4bn) Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) project by the first half of 2012.

The project involves extension of the 15-km light rail transit line one by 11.7 km southward from Baclaran to Cavite. Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas said whoever wins the construction and design contract for LRT-1 extension project will operate the entire 28km railway line system.
"It comes with the O&M bid contract. We envisioned the funding for this to come from the private sector. It will be a straight up design and build construction project," said Roxas.
LRT Line 1 extension project also involves purchase of initial rolling stock of 55 train sets to be deployed on the line. Out of the total 11.7km planned to be extended, 10.5km will be elevated and 1.2km will be at-grade.
The line will have eight passenger stations with a provision for two additional stations, one satellite depot and three intermodal facilities.

By GlobalDataCurrently, LRT-1 runs from Baclaran in Pasay to Roosevelt Ave. in Quezon. LRT Line 1 project is now with the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) for evaluation, which is expected to endorse the project by end of the month.
LRT-1 project is among the several big ticket CAPEX projects to be implemented by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) in 2012.
LRT-2 project, which involves extension of the existing LRT Line 2 by 4.14 km eastward from Santolan Station at Marcos Highway, to Pasig to Masinag, Antipolo, will be submitted to NEDA this month.
NEDA is conducting a passenger demand study in relation to the project before the project gets endorsement. The original LRT Line 1 is known as Yellow line, with the LRT Line 2 (LRT-2 or MRT-2) as the Purple line.
