ScotRail has unveiled plans to invest £2m for power shower systems, which will remove snow from coaches and engines.
The rail operator is planning to use 75m polytunnels that will be capable of defrosting three carriages and a diesel engine in less than two hours.
The power shower system will melt snow and ice from the underside of locomotives and coaches.
Staff on the trains will also be given smartphones to provide real-time information about services.
The rail operator said about 70 trains were damaged last winter due to snow as ice blocks fell from the underside of locomotives then bounced back upwards.
