Siemens is set to install the new ‘Tractronic Thinity’ railway transformer for the first time on-board 24 DB-Regio trains based on the Mireo train platform from 2020.

Siemens' new transformer system feeds the train’s power supply and ensures interference-free rail traffic, and is claimed to be more lightweight than previous models.

The 24 Mireo trains are scheduled to start operating on the Offenburg – Freiburg – Basel / Neuchâtel (Switzerland) line, as well as in the Kaiserstuhl region from Freiburg to Endingen / Breisach.

The Mireo locomotives are expected to reduce the overall journey time by roughly 30 minutes.

Siemens Power Transformers CEO Beatrix Natter said: “Through the use of new materials and thanks to our innovative cooling concept, the Tractronic Thinity is a real lightweight.

“With a weight saving of up to 25%, we’ve also been able to further reduce losses. That makes the Tractronic Thinity the most efficient and flexible vehicle transformer on the market.”

The company also notes that transformer's flexible design will allow operators to install the system on the rooftops or under the floors of the trains.

Furthermore, it is expected to reduce the trains’ energy consumption by approximately 25%.

"Through the use of new materials and thanks to our innovative cooling concept, the Tractronic Thinity is a real lightweight."

Tractronic Thinity uses groundwater-neutral and biologically degradable ester oil for insulation and cooling, and features the latest 3D-CFX simulations in order to improve fire protection.

Traction transformers supply power to all sections of the rail vehicle, including the lighting and ventilation systems, signalling technology and communications solutions.

Siemens manufactures and supplies traction transformers to operators worldwide.

The company produces the equipment at its five manufacturing facilities under the supervision of its lead management team based in Nuremberg, Germany.
