Canada-based SNC-Lavalin (SNC), in a joint venture (JV) with Graham Infrastructure, has won a $300m contract from the city of Edmonton, Canada, to construct the Edmonton North light rapid transit (LRT) project..
Under the contract, the JV will provide construction management services, labour, materials and equipment for construction work, as well as testing and commissioning the system.
The North LRT is a 3.3km extension stretching from the existing Churchill underground station to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) campus.
The extension is an intermediary link from the existing LRT system to the proposed service line north of the St Albert.
About 700m of the LRT extension will involve construction of an underground tunnel from the Churchill LRT station, while the remaining 2.6km of at-grade guideway will have four passenger stations at MacEwan University, Kingsway, Royal Alexandra Hospital and NAIT.
Work on the project started in March and is expected to be completed by December 2013.
