The city of Tampere, Finland, has awarded a €250m contract to Tralli consortium of Pöyry, VR Track and YIT to build the city’s planned 23.5km light rail line.
The new light rail system, which will have between 23 and 25 stops, would link the city centre with Sampola, where branches would continue to the University of Tampere and Hervanta.
Work will be carried out under an alliance model, where the client, engineers and contractors work jointly in the execution.
Development of the line will be initiated in July with Pöyry and VR Track jointly responsible for all engineering during development and in the subsequent implementation phase.
Pöyry infrastructure design unit president Mikko Inkala said: "In an alliance project, all parties have a vested interest in ensuring the success of the project.
"Pöyry is fully committed to providing the project with its best infrastructure engineering expertise."

By GlobalDataFollowing completion of the development phase, separate decisions will be made on the start of the implementation phase during which VR Track and YIT will be in charge of the construction.
If the implementation is initiated, the light rail system is scheduled to be completed in two parts, in 2019 and 2023.
VR Track Oy Construction vice-president Harri Lukkarinen said: "The light rail system is one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Finland, providing a great opportunity for the entire consortium.
"All parties involved have prior experience in working with the alliance model, so we have good conditions for building a successful project."
