Ealing Council in London, UK, has approved proposals for a major overhaul of West Ealing station as part of the Crossrail programme.

Bennetts Associates has designed a glass and steel structure for a bright, modern, spacious new ticket hall, which will be located on Manor Road.

The upgrade will include construction of a new bay platform, extend platforms of the station to accommodate the new 200m-long Crossrail trains.

The station will also get a new footbridge with lifts to provide step-free access to every platform.

"Once Crossrail opens fully in 2019, local people will be able to travel right through the centre of the capital."

The improvements will also see new lighting, customer information screens, station signage, help points and CCTV at the station.

Network Rail (NR), in charge of delivering the Crossrail improvements in the Ealing project, will shortly begin work to extend the platforms and build a new footbridge.

The new bay platform for trains on the Greenford branch line is due to be brought into use by early 2016.

Work to build the new station is scheduled to begin in early 2016 and would take about a year to complete.

Crossrail surface director Matthew White said: "The new ticket hall, footbridge and lifts will transform passengers’ experience of using West Ealing station.

"Once Crossrail opens fully in 2019, local people will be able to travel right through the centre of the capital, making it quicker and easier to get to a range of destinations across London and the South East."

Crossrail has also been working with Ealing Council and NR to help develop plans to carry out improvements to the area around the new station to offer better connection to other forms of transport, provide cycle parking as well as improve the surrounding pavements and roads.

Bennetts Associates studio director David Laing said: "The new building is the latest in a family of Bennetts Associates designed Crossrail stations across west London to be approved.

"The double-height glazed concourse and canopied frontage will create a modern, fully accessible station that befits West Ealing’s improved connectivity with central London once Crossrail opens fully in 2019."

From the end of 2017, West Ealing station will be managed by Transport for London (TfL) as part of London’s integrated transport network.

The new Crossrail trains will begin serving West Ealing from 2018, while passengers will be able to travel through the new Crossrail tunnels beneath central London from 2019.
