The Government of Victoria in Australia is set to refurbish north east line’s fleet of classic trains and plans to replace them with new rolling stock.
The Victorian budget for this year has designated A$15m ($10.8m) for extra train carriages on the line, as well as reconfigurations to make them more comfortable for passengers and to improve reliability. New generation of rolling stock is also planned.
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said: "We know the north east needs better trains, so we’re improving the carriages we have and planning for better trains in the future.
"We are doing planning work that has never been done before to deliver the next generation of trains for the northeast line and we’ll look at which coach connections we can improve straight away."
The government plans to seek passenger input on design expectations for the new trains. Consultation is also set to begin on a trial of new express coach shuttles running to Seymour.
Member for Northern Victoria and the regional transport advisory group co-chair Jaclyn Symes said: "Communities in North East Victoria deserve better train, bus, and coach services and a long term plan for the future, that’s what we’re delivering.
