Australia’s Victorian Government has called for expressions of interest (EOI) for the design, construction and maintenance of a next-generation, high-capacity trains for Melbourne.
The government is spending A$1.3bn ($997m) on the new trains, which will be operated on Melbourne’s busiest Cranbourne-Pakenham line.
The 37 new high-capacity metro trains running on Melbourne’s busiest line will carry at least 20% more passengers than the existing models.
The new trains will be longer than existing models and will use the latest technology, making them safer, more reliable and comfortable for passengers.
The government noted that the new trains, together with its plan to remove every level crossing between Dandenong and the city, and signalling upgrades, will increase capacity in the Dandenong corridor by 42%.
Australian Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said: "These trains will be built in Victoria, for Victoria. The EOI represents what this government is all about: local jobs, skills and better public transport."

By GlobalData"The new high-capacity trains will carry more people with every journey, and is part of our plan for a bigger, better public transport system through Melbourne Metro Rail and the removal of our worst level crossings."
According to the government, at least 50% of the manufacturing must be carried out locally and the successful bidder will have to show how its plan will boost employment, training and investment through the delivery of new trains.
According to the government, the EOI will close in August.
The 37 new trains are part of the government’s Trains, Trams, Jobs 2015-2025 rolling stock strategy, which outlines a ten-year plan for 100 new trains, 100 new trams and a massive boost to the regional train fleet.
