Cabling and connectivity solutions provider Nexans has secured a €65m contract from the Swedish Government’s Transport Administration Trafikverket to supply optical fibre solutions.

The deployment of optical fibre cable solutions is expected to bolster communication systems across the Swedish rail network.

Nexans will manufacture the optical fibre cable solutions at its Grimsås plant in Sweden, while Emtelle Technologies will supply the microducts and microduct bundles.

Emtelle European business development director Colin Kirkpatrick said: “The main beauty of our microducts and microduct bundles is that they boost operators’ capacity with minimal disruption thanks to the reduced installation time while reducing ongoing operational costs and optimising total cost of ownership.”

The project is expected to support the Swedish government’s initiative to develop ‘Fiber to the X’ (FTTX) networks throughout the country.

“We are joining forces with Emtelle to help the Swedish operators cover huge swathes of their national networks rapidly and cost-effectively with our cutting-edge solutions.”

Nexans telecom sales head for Nordic countries Christer Larsson said: “Nexans is proud to contribute to the upgrade of the Swedish rail network with our innovative range of fibre solutions, building on our local manufacturing presence.

“And as the rail market in Sweden is in the throes of a huge FTTX expansion, we are joining forces with Emtelle to help the Swedish operators cover huge swathes of their national networks rapidly and cost-effectively with our cutting-edge solutions.”

The overall solution to be supplied under the contract will be compatible with the existing Swedish rail network and will also fulfil other customer requirements.

Deliveries of the optical fibre solutions to Trafikverket will start from early next year and will be completed by 2029.

Nowadays, the high-speed communication systems serve as an important component in the rail networks by transmitting data between remote locations and control centres.

It enables real-time monitoring over the railway system and helps the operator to optimise traffic.
