The company said that around 50 trains will begin operations from 15 December 2019. It expects a further 49 to start operations next year.

Train features will include air-conditioning, power sockets near the seats, free Wi-Fi services and customer information screens. They will also offer more space and better accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

The new trains are part of Northern’s £500m investment to transform the travel in north England. The trains were purchased with investment from Eversholt Rail Group.

The rail operator is in the process of upgrading its existing fleet of 268 trains and modernising its stations. It has started an additional 2,000 services weekly since 2016.

Northern regional director Steve Hopkinson said: “The Northern network is busier than it has been for a generation, more than 100 million customer journeys will be made on Northern services in 2019, and the introduction of new trains is at the heart of delivering improvements for our customers.

“These fantastic trains are a true step-change in travelling experience and we are extremely proud to be delivering a £500m investment for our customers.”

Last month, Northern announced that 33% of its new fleet has begun service on various routes in the UK.

Earlier this year, Northern introduced the first nine CAF trains into service for operations across routes between Doncaster and Leeds, Cumbria and Manchester Airport, and Liverpool to Manchester Airport.

In June last year, the first vehicle of Northern’s new Class 195 train fleet arrived in the UK from Spain.
