The Government of Queensland in Australia has selected companies to build the A$5.4bn ($3.84bn) Cross River Rail Project in Brisbane.

Overall, the project involves building a 10.2km rail line between Dutton Park and Bowen Hills. It includes construction of a 5.9km twin tunnel under the Brisbane River and CBD, four new underground stations, and rehabilitation of existing stations.

The government has awarded the Tunnel, Stations and Development (TSD) public-private partnership work package to PULSE consortium.

The Rail, Integration and Systems (RIS) package will be delivered by UNITY alliance, which comprises CPB Contractors, UGL, AECOM and Jacobs, as well as partners HASSELL, RCS Australia, Acmena, Martinus Rail and Wired Overhead Solutions.

The scope of work under this package includes upgrades to Exhibition station, the delivery of supporting rail system and integration of Cross River Rail into Queensland Rail’s train network.

Finally, the European Train Control System (ETCS) will be delivered by Hitachi Rail STS. It will increase the safety of operations and capability of the rail network.

Scheduled to become operational in 2024, the Cross River Rail will alleviate road congestion and bolster the transport network in Queensland.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: “Cross River Rail is Brisbane’s new underground. It means more trains, more often across the entire South-East.”

During the construction period, the project is estimated to support up to 7,700 jobs.
