In addition, Siemens will install a digital collision warning system to enable early detection of potential hazards and help in avoiding accidents.

All the vehicles will also feature air suspension, air conditioning and infotainment systems to maximise passenger comfort.

Siemens Mobility CEO Michael Peter said: “This order has a very special meaning for us, since it marks our return to the market for high-floor light rail vehicles.

“Our trains will offer more than two million people in Düsseldorf and Duisburg the highest level of passenger comfort.

“Our services will also guarantee our customers optimal availability and a sustainable increase in value over the vehicles’ entire lifecycle.”

The deliveries are expected to begin in 2025.

Recently, Siemens Mobility signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a spun-off entity Siemens Energy to develop hydrogen systems for trains.
