Transport for London (TfL) in the UK has completed significant upgrade works on the London Underground in order to modernise the Tube service and provide quicker and more reliable journeys for passengers.
The scope of work included the installation of cables over 3.5km of track to support the network’s new Wi-Fi-based signalling system.
Three track junctions at Earl’s Court were also replaced, while two new low-vibration track junctions were deployed to connect the new Northern Line Extension tunnels to the existing Northern line at Kennington.
The upgrade works are expected to facilitate an increase in the frequency of the train services.
Furthermore, TfL carried out a series of complete track improvement works and replaced more than 100 planks that support the rails on junctions around Wimbledon and Wimbledon Park stations.
The transport body also cleared approximately 100t of debris and rotten vegetation at trackside to reduce future maintenance costs and ensure more efficient service.

By GlobalDataTfL London Underground managing director Mark Wild said: “The work we completed over the festive period was incredibly complex and I thank customers for their patience whilst our engineers worked around the clock to carry it out.
“This work is part of our record investment in the Tube, which will see over 40% of the network radically improved with more frequent trains, quicker journeys and better reliability, and the first major extension to the Tube network since the 1990s.”
Passengers are expected to receive the benefits of the upgrade work later this year after the new signalling system becomes operational between Hammersmith and Latimer Road, as well as the opening of the new Hammersmith Control Centre.
The initiative is expected to reduce journey times and the capacities of the lines are estimated to improve by 33%.
