By GlobalDataThe Digital Systems Programme involves the replacement of current signalling and train control systems with new, globally proven intelligent technology to allow more trains to operate on the track.
This will result in a higher frequency of consistent services for Sydney Trains commuters.
The contract also comprises knowledge transfer and build-up of experience to the key stakeholders.
In December 2018, the first phase of the system integrator contract was awarded to NRC by the NSW government.
With the extension of the contract, NRC will support the introduction of the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 with a traffic management system (TMS) on the first two deployment areas.
These two deployment areas include Bondi to Erskineville and Cronulla to Sutherland.
The NRC stated that this Sydney-based project will witness the amalgamation of Australian, Spanish and UK expertise, along with the newest digital railway technology, through its partnership with Acmena, The Go-Ahead Group and Ineco.
NRC global managing director Nigel Ash said: “This extension demonstrates the contribution the 40 strong NRC led team has made to the project over the last two years. We look forward to continuing this highly collaborative relationship with TfNSW through to the introduction of ETCS Level 2 services.”
In a separate development, HS2 has shortlisted Alstom Transport UK, Siemens Mobility, Hitachi Rail and Thales Transport & Security for the delivery of signalling and control systems across phase one.
In addition to up to 25 years of technical support, the £540m contract includes the designing and development of the signalling systems to control trains travelling at a speed of 360km/h.
