South Australia orders additional A-City EMU trains
The Government of South Australia placed a contract variation for 12 three-car A-City electric multiple unit (EMU) trains with Bombardier Transportation.
The latest order will increase the A-City EMU fleet to a total of 34 trains, bolstering the capacity of Adelaide’s suburban network.

US MBTA breaks ground on South Coast Rail project
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the US started the construction of the South Coast Rail project.
Construction works began with a ground-breaking ceremony attended by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, MassDOT Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack, MBTA general manager Steve Poftak and other officials.
The project will be delivered in phases, with Phase I South Coast Rail work currently underway.

Siemens to supply 73 Avenio trams to Munich
Siemens Mobility received a €200m contract to deliver 73 Avenio trams to Stadtwerke München (SWM), a public service provider in Munich, Germany.
The trams will expand SWM’s Avenio fleet, which operates across the Munich tram network. It will also enable the operator to introduce new tram routes and enhance the existing network.
Siemens Mobility CEO Sabrina Soussan said: “In 2012, Munich was the first customer to order the new Avenio. In the meantime, SWM has continually expanded its Avenio fleet.”
India allocates $9.62bn for railways in union budget
Indian Railways received a budgetary allocation of Rs658.37bn ($9.62bn) in the union budget this fiscal year, compared to Rs550.88bn ($8.05bn) last year.
In her maiden budget speech, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed a capital expenditure outlay of Rs1.6tn ($23.4bn) for railways, the highest ever for the sector.
The outlay figure includes the annual budgetary allocation, as well as funds from the Nirbhaya Fund, Internal Resources and the Extra Budgetary Resources.
ADB grants $1.3bn loan for Philippines’ Malolos–Clark Railway Project
Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed an agreement with the Government of the Philippines to provide a $1.3bn loan for the construction of the Malolos–Clark Railway Project.
The agreement was signed by Philippine Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III and ADB vice-president Ahmed M Saeed.
This loan is the first tranche of the total $2.75bn required for the project.
Malolos–Clark railway is part of the North-South Commuter Railway project (NSCR), which aims to connect New Clark City to Calamba by 2025.
Philippines signs rolling stock contract for PNR Clark Phase I project
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) in the Philippines entered an agreement to procure rolling stock for the flagship PNR Clark Phase I project.
The PHP12.1bn ($240m) agreement, representing the third package of the project, was signed with a Japanese joint venture (JV), comprising Sumitomo and Japan Transport Engineering Company (J-TREC).
Under the contract, the Japanese consortium will deliver 104 vehicles configured into 13 eight-car train sets. Each of these train sets will be designed to accommodate up to 2,242 passengers.
Link Alliance signs $1.12bn Auckland City Rail Link project contract
The Link Alliance consortium signed an NZ$1.66bn ($1.12bn) design-construction alliance contract to deliver ‘Package 3’ of the City Rail Link project in New Zealand.
The signing of the agreement follows the selection of the consortium by the project promoter in April when Link Alliance also secured an NZ$75m ($50.7m) contract for early works.
Under the latest contract, the consortium will design and build the 3.45km-long train line extension, including a 3.2km-long tunnel to connect Britomart station with Mount Eden station.
California bullet train authority gets environmental review approval
The California High-Speed Rail Authority in the US received federal approval to assume environmental review responsibilities.
Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) awarded the responsibility to conduct such reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and other federal environmental laws.
The move will enable the California High-Speed Rail Authority to advance with pending environmental reviews for the first phase of the high-speed rail programme from San Francisco to the Los Angeles area.
Heathrow Express partners with NCC Group to reduce downtime for its ticketing app
Heathrow Express strengthened its partnership with cybersecurity and risk mitigation firm NCC Group to further secure and minimise disruption for its cloud-based mobile ticketing service.
If the Heathrow Express application witnesses a software failure or potential disruptions, NCC Group’s Escrow as a Service (EaaS) solution will ensure access to the application is still available, hence reducing downtime. This will be done by creating a replica of its cloud environment by NCC Group.

Siemens to deliver light-rail vehicles to San Diego and Portland
Siemens Mobility secured two contracts to deliver S700 light-rail vehicles (LRVs) to Portland’s TriMet in Oregon and San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System (MTS).
Under the first contract with TriMet, Siemens will supply 26 LRVs that will replace the existing Type-1 vehicles.
The overall contract includes the option to deliver up to 60 additional LRVs. Additional S700s will enable TriMet to expand services, including the MAX Red Line Extension to Fair Complex, as well as the Southwest Corridor.
