Pickersgill Kaye’s skirt panel locks were originally fitted to the Alstom classes 465 and 466 electric multiple units (EMUs) built in 1992, and are also fitted to the Cl 390 Alstom Pendolino trains used in the West Coast Main Line franchise.
For the West Coast Mainline, two opposite hand locks are fitted per panel. The locks comprise of a powder painted aluminium dish and handle.
The handle is locked in its vertical position to indicate the panel is securely fixed and can only be released using a BR carriage key. The keyhole is gated to prevent unauthorised access.
The main advantages of the latest locks are their weight, only 1.3Kg per unit, and low unit cost. These benefits were realised due to the significant quantities required for these particular contracts.
