Smith Systems designs and manufactures ultra-high reliability sensors for monitoring speed, motion and temperature of railway components.
The company supplies ISO 9001 and IRIS certified standard and customised sensors, cable harnessing and mobile sensor testing equipment for industries such as heavy equipment, aerospace, mining and industrial applications.
All products offered by Smith Systems are ‘Designed to Survive®’ in railway operating environments.
VR passive sensors for monitoring train speed and position
Smith Systems’ range of high-performance passive / variable reluctance (VR) sensors is designed for use in high-temperature environments. The sensors output sinusoidal waves that reflect the speed of magnetic and non-magnetic components such as gears, shafts and blades.
VR passive sensors require a minimum amount of revolutions per minute (RPM) for correct output and monitoring. The company can produce variations of the sensors with a range of housing styles and materials, cable lengths, and connectors.
High-accuracy zero speed hall-effect sensors for railways
Zero-speed hall-effect sensors manufactured by Smith Systems are highly precise and accurate, outputting square waves for every object that passes them within their specified air gap.
The sensors require an input voltage that allows them to monitor speed as low as 0mph for systems such as gears, shafts and blades.
Hall-effect sensors can be used for proximity, as well as reflecting components that may or may not be present in front of them. Zero-speed hall-effect sensors can use multiple channels and allow the user to determine speed and direction, allowing multiple data outputs.
Temperature sensors for railway components
Smith Systems produces heavy-duty temperature sensors for the railway industry using different methods to ensure that a number of options are available, including output curves, custom or standard housing, varying cable lengths and connectors. Custom designs can be created to suit the sensor’s environmental requirements.
Cable harnessing for railway sensors
The company manufactures cable harnessing suitable for pairing with sensors and other equipment that is used in adverse conditions.
All environmental factors are taken into consideration during product design, with a range of options available such as cable lengths, connectors, material, conductor colour, and armour jacketing.
Mobile sensor testing equipment
Smith Systems provides a range of mobile testing products suitable for use in the field. Equipment allows clients to test sensors on site or for upcoming inspections. Products are available from small battery-powered handheld testing units to complete test labs that utilise oscilloscopes.
