Rail construction services
L&T offers a range of multi-disciplinary services, including construction of railway sidings and yards, bridges (steel and concrete), tunnels, rail-based urban transit systems (metro systems), stations (including underground stations), railway electrification, signal and telecommunication systems, integrated / composite railway projects, railway track-laying, industrial infrastructure for manufacturing critical railway assets, and closed-loop rail transportation systems (merry-go-round systems) for comprehensive and cost-effective bulk material movement.
Rail design, engineering, operation and maintenance
L&T provides design and engineering services in all fields (civil, bridges, ballast and ballastless track, electrical, S&T, etc) of railway infrastructure, rolling stock, locomotives, intercity coaches, wagons, etc. L&T also caters for the operation and maintenance of railway assets.
Rail bridge construction
Our Indian rail bridges include Yamuna Bridge, Halladi Bridge and Panval Nadi Viaduct (the Konkan Railway). Other bridges include Gambhir Khad and Jhajjar Khad bridges. Jhajjar Bridge has a maximum pier height of 85m and the longest bridge span (154m) on the Jammu-Udhampur rail link of the Northern Railway.
Metro rail system construction
L&T has contributed significantly to the successful implementation of Phase I of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Project. As a consortium partner, L&T constructed an underground corridor from Kashmere Gate to Central Secretariat, Mandi House underground station, and the ramp on the extension of the Barakhamba Road-Dwarka metro corridor towards Pragati Maidan.
Rail station, terminal and building construction
L&T constructed the largest Delhi Metro underground station at Rajiv Chowk. In addition, the company executed a platform tunnel for the deepest station at Chawri Bazaar. L&T is also constructing underground stations at Udyog Bhavan, Saket and Green Park in Phase II of the Delhi Metro.
Electrification and signalling and telecommunication systems
L&T’s track record encompasses over 6,000km of electrification, and it has competence in design, engineering, installation, testing and commissioning of DC and AC traction systems. Key sections electrified include the Jhansi-Bina Section of North Central Railway, the Kota-Nagda Section of West Central Railway, and the Egmore-Tambaram Metro Line in Chennai. L&T has also commissioned many track sub-stations and switching stations.
L&T has the experience and expertise to handle major turnkey projects for signalling and telecommunication including design, installation, testing and commissioning of relay interlocking and electronic interlocking of stations, train detection systems, interlocking of level crossings, OFC-based telecom systems, etc.

Monorail design, construction, installation, testing and commissioning, operation and maintenance
Mumbai monorail from MMRDA on LSTK basis: L&T, with Scomi Engineering, Malaysia, has obtained an order from Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to implement India’s first monorail system (20km) in Mumbai. The project involves design, construction, installation, testing and commissioning, integrated testing, and initial operation and maintenance. The value is Rs24.6bn or $525m.
Rail wheel manufacturing plant
Rail wheel manufacturing plant for Indian Railway on EPC basis: An EPC contract for setting up Indian Railway’s cast steel wheel manufacturing plant in the Chhapara district of Bihar, to manufacture 100,000 cast-steel railway wheels per annum. The project involves complete civil works, electrical installations, design, supply erection, and commissioning of plant and machinery. The value is Rs10.47bn or $225m.
Development of railway sidings
Development of railway siding for Sterlite Energy’s 2,400MW power plant in Jharsuguda, Orissa, on a turnkey basis: This is an EPC job for a dedicated railway line of 38km involving complete design engineering (both layouts and structures), project execution, quality assurance, project management, integration, and commissioning including civil, track work, bridges, OHE, S&T works. The value is Rs3bn or $65m.
