Austrak was founded in 1980. Since then, it has grown to be Australia’s largest railway sleeper manufacturer and a world-leader in prestressed concrete sleeper design and production technologies.

For more than 30 years Austrak has provided its clients with safety, certainty and engineering excellence.

In that time, it has produced in excess of 18 million sleepers and built 12 factories in Australia and overseas.

Austrak specialises in providing flexible client-oriented cost-effective solutions, including sleeper design and supply, and end to end logistics capability.

Austrak has grown to become a leader in the design and manufacture of pre-stressed concrete railway sleepers (ties) and turnout bearers.
Austrak has patented a railway sleeper design system to replace existing timber railway ties with low-profile concrete sleepers.
Austrak’ s commitment to working in partnership with its clients underpins its ability to remain at the forefront of railway sleeper and rail product manufacturing - guaranteeing enhanced value and service.
Austrak specialises in the rapid deployment of factories, and has a proven track record of doing so in remote and inhospitable areas.
Austrak is a vertically integrated company with the in-house expertise to design, construct, commission and operate railway sleeper production plants.

New Dubai factory

The Dubai factory is Austrak’s newest and largest facility which commenced manufacturing in January 2012 and provides capacity in a location that could serve local and international projects.

Located in the heart of the Dubai Industrial district, the factory is just a few kilometres from the Port of Jebel Ali.

Austrak has developed a specially designed sleeper pack for easy handling and maximum sleeper protection during transit. With packaging targeted to impact areas, our slingable pack enables safe and efficient loading and unloading processes.

Concrete sleepers for heavy haul

Austrak’s emphasis on research and development in sleeper design and production technologies ensures it remains at the forefront of the industry. It supplies into the heaviest and most demanding railways in the world.

Austrak has in-house design expertise to develop sleeper designs for any application in any track gauge from 9tal to 50tal, 600mm to 1,600mm gauge. The patented design approach used for developing the concrete TRS sleeper provides an innovative solution for next generation metros.

The product range includes:

  • Heavy haul sleepers
  • Light rail sleepers
  • Special sleepers
  • Turnout bearers
  • Mainline sleepers
  • Timber replacement sleepers (TRS)
  • Monorail
  • Level crossings

Production technology

While Austrak specialises in sleeper solutions, its real product is the intellectual property tied up in its factory designs and operating systems.

Some factories have been custom-built to meet a client’s specific project needs, at times in very remote and challenging locations.
The factories operate under Austrak’s own work methods and quality assurance standards which are third party accredited to ISO 9001. The systems also comply with the requirements of ISO 14001.

Austrak owns the design of more than 12 tailor-made machines. Built-in automation improves product quality by reducing product variation concerns.

Projects

  • Murray Basin Rail Project, Victoria

The Murray Basin rail project, initiated in February 2015, includes significant upgrades on Victoria's rail freight network in order to standardise the rail freight services across Northern Victoria and increase the freight capacity.

  • Hamersley Freight Line

Iron ore railways in the Pilbara region of north-west Western Australia are the most productive railways in the world and are set to improve over the next few years now that Hamersley Iron has finalised an agreement with Robe River Iron Associates to form a joint rail operation.

  • Line operated by Queensland Rail

Tilt train technology has been introduced to eastern Australia in June 2003 following completion of Queensland Rail's (QR) A$590 million project to upgrade its 1,681km main line between Brisbane and Cairns, cutting journey times by seven hours, three times a week.
